Big Dreams From The Beginning
Posted1889 was a big year in our history with the spring bringing new families to the territory in The Land Run. By October 16 people had been meeting for worship in the Central Hotel west of Broadway and sometimes in the Catholic Church at the southwest corner of First and Boulevard.
Mrs. Mary Weaver wrote in an article “A Historical Survey of Our Past” that it was on an August afternoon in 1889 that Rev. J.E. Roberts of the Darlington Mission Circuit rode into Edmond in a $2,00 cart, drawn by a small $5.00 pony.
By 1890 a church building was started and the first services were held on October 18, 1891.
By November 9, 1891 the first classes of Central Normal School were held in our building with 23 students.
From the very beginning our leaders wanted to shape the future by training teachers. Education continues to be a major part of our ministry and leaders have a positive working relationship with University of Oklahoma, now the third largest university in our state. The dreams were big and they have become a reality!
