Camp season is here!

A child’s experience at an Oklahoma Conference camp is one that is surrounded in Christian love and great learning actives. The children will enjoy a taste of hiking, swimming, crafts and learning in small groups under the caring and watchful eyes of leaders. They will start to build relationships with other children that can continue through a lifetime. Camps are always looking for parents to help provide supervision at camp so if your child is hesitant about staying away from home you have the opportunity to attend with your child.

SonShine: Under God’s Roof
Entering Grades 1 – 2 June 9-10

Early elementary campers enjoy a taste of hiking, swimming, crafts and active learning in small groups under the caring and watchful eye of shepherds and leaders. All activities and creative worship in this overnight camp are geared for this younger age-level. Campers: $63 Adults: $40

Growin’ In Grace: Partners in Creating
Entering Grades 3 – 5 June 4-6

Older elementary campers have the opportunity to experience God’s love in God’s beautiful creation over this three day; two night camp. In addition to hiking, swimming, recreation, and crafts, campers participate in interactive small group learning and creative worship. Campers: $152

T’weens Discover: Got Spirit?
Finding God in the Everyday
Entering Grade 6 June 4-8

Acknowledging the uniqueness of pre-t’weens, this camp for rising sixth graders is designed to help t’weeners explore the concept that God is always with us. In “Got Spirit” campers will explore different ways God reveals God’s self to the human family, by affirming God’s presence in the ordinary moments of life. Campers: $255

If you are interested in attending or have questions please email Megan Borum at megan@fumcedmond.org or call 405.650.5426.

We are so excited about our progress toward our goal! Half way is so very good and on behalf of all of us I thank each of you. This is a wonderful beginning! Not all of our commitment cards for the expansion of our building campaign called GOD’S STORY, OUR STORY: GO TELL IT ON THE MOUNTAIN have been turned in though, but we hope they will be in by May 20th, the time of our First Fruits Offering. This will be the day we announce the total of our commitments and match it with our $2 million goal. Every person’s commitment and one time gifts are very important to the future ministry of this church.

If you have not returned your card please do so as soon as possible. There are extra cards in the sanctuary pews. Or if you would like the church office mail you one please call and let the staff know.

Please remember, this is a “family of faith” goal and we can reach it ONLY BY ALL OF US GIVING a gift to honor God and sustain the ministry for generations to come. It will be amazing when we all step out in faith how we will realize that God steps out too! God wants to show our love with our ultimate faith.

If there is any way I can be of assistance in your discernment process, please do let me know. Just give me a call or email me.

Blessings, Bert

“Silence in the face of evil is itself evil: God will not hold us guiltless. Not to speak is to speak. Not to act is to act.” –Dietrich Bonhoeffer

Dietrich Bonhoeffer was a great person of faith and action. He was a German pastor, theologian and author who showed incredible courage while facing the evil Nazi regime. He knew how important it was for Christians to support the Jews who were being wiped out by Hitler’s Third Reich. A humble man of faith, he left the safe haven of America to go to Germany and openly oppose Hitler in all ways possible. He was radical, courageous and joyful about justice. He was executed in a concentration camp in 1945. America and the world defeated Hitler’s forces soon thereafter.

Passion for truth and justice matters. Edmond First and the overall body of Christ exist because the downtrodden all over the world should have advocates who speak and act with courage and conviction in the face of oppression of any kind.

We study the Bible and live the faith for all the right reasons. To stay on track, we need intimate relationships with God and each other as we sort our way through the daily maze of current struggles, complications and issues that affect all of creation. Sometimes we are weak and sometimes we are hypocrites. We falter. We fall. We fail. We also succeed and become more mature and faithful with God’s help and with the fellowship and nurturing support of each other. Our struggles are holy and sacred. Our struggles are worthy. Consider the issues raised by Bonhoeffer below in a writing he drafted while in prison in Germany before his execution.

WHO AM I?

Who am I? They often tell me
I stepped from my cell’s confinement
Calmly, cheerfully, firmly,
Like a squire from his country-house.
Who am I? They often tell me
I used to speak to my warders
Freely and friendly and clearly,
As though it were mine to command.
Who am I? They also tell me
I bore the days of misfortune
Equally, smilingly, proudly,
Like one accustomed to win.

Am I then really all that which other men tell of?
Or am I only what I myself know of myself?
Restless and longing and sick, like a bird in a cage,
Struggling for breath, as though hands were compressing my throat,
Yearning for colors, for flowers, for the voices of birds,
Thirsting for words of kindness, for neighborliness,
Tossing in expectation of great events,
Powerlessly trembling for friends at an infinite distance,
Weary and empty at praying, at thinking, at making,
Faint, and ready to say farewell to it all?

Who am I? This or the other? Am I one person today and tomorrow another? Am I both at once? A hypocrite before others,And before myself a contemptibly woebegone weakling? Or is something within me still like a beaten army, Fleeing in disorder from victory already achieved? Who am I? They mock me, these lonely questions of mine. Whoever I am, Thou knowest, O God, I am Thine!

Let us pray that we will be as serious and concerned about living a meaningful, passionate life of faith with as much introspective struggle and outward life of action as expressed by the living example of Bonhoeffer.
