The mission of City Care’s Whiz Kids is to improve the well-being of inner-city youth through academic tutoring, positive mentoring relationships, as well as communicating spiritual and moral values.
Every Thursday afternoon during the school year, our members partner with New Hope Baptist Church and Tabitha Baptist church to provide one on one reading tutoring for 2nd through 5th grade students. Our tutors primarily come from our members at FUMC, Edmond, but also from New Hope Baptist Church, and other denominations. Our school children come from Edwards Elementary School, which is in the Oklahoma City school system. This year our site location is at Tabitha Baptist Church at 1219 NE Grand Blvd, just north of Edwards Elementary school. It is a larger space for tutoring and is conveniently all on one floor. Tutors meet at Tabitha at 3:00 to prepare for the children and children arrive around 3:20. In addition to the 45 to 50 minutes of reading with their tutor, children enjoy a snack, prepared by volunteers from New Hope Baptist Church, and a faith-based club time which brings to these students the stories of God’s love and character building.
Our members are tutors, substitute tutors, and provide items for special events around Christmas, Valentine’s Day, the beginning and ending of the school year, etc.
We have children on the waiting list, and they remain on that list until we can find a tutor volunteer. Do you want to help? It’s very rewarding. There are subs should you need to be gone, and Whiz Kids will train you for the program.
