The mission of City Care’s Whiz Kids is to improve the well-being of inner-city youth through academic tutoring, positive mentoring relationships, as well as communicating spiritual and moral values.
Every Thursday afternoon durng the school year our members partner with New Hope Baptist Church to provide a tutoring progrm through the Whiz Kids program. Our school children come from Edwards Elementary School, which is in the Oklahoma City school system. We arrive at our site, New Hope Baptist Church located at 1232 NE 7th Street at 3:00 PM. The children arrive at 3:30 PM, enjoy a snack meal, then read with their tutors. At 4:30 there is a Chritian Club time which is followed by the naming of the student of the week.
Our members are tutors, substitute tutors, and provide items for special events around Christmas, Valentines Day, the beginning and ending of the school year, etc.
We have children on the waiting list, and they remain on that list until we can find a tutor volunteer. Do you want to help? It’s very rewarding. There are subs should you need to be gone, and Whiz Kids will train you for the program. Contact Richard Powers at 340-5016 or Kathy Coit at 530-2059 if you want to connect with Whiz Kids.
